Sleep
like an old friend of mine
brings ease when it is most needed.
In times of trouble, it brings comfort.
Like a friend,
sleep remembers it all.
The good in a dream,
the bad in a nightmare,
like a flash of the mind.
Sleep
like an old friend of mine
can bring out the truth in the depths of the night
when I relinquish all vulnerabilities.
Sleep swoops in for the consummation of my soul
when I finally cave in to all my inequities.
Sleep
like a friend I once knew
is a double-edged sword
meant to provide rest, comfort, and ease
yet only keeps me up tossing and turning
through the depths of the night.
making me sift through the endless possibilities of this thing called life.
